Piezoelectric Products for Ultrasonic Welding Devices
Noliac, a part of CTS Corporation, provides piezoelectric bulk components and custom designed ultrasonic transducers used in industrial equipment. One of these types of piezo-based applications is ultrasonic welding.
Advantages of ultrasonic welding
Ultrasonic welding can be used to weld plastics and different metals. The weld is very strong without any addition of connective bolts, nails, or adhesives etc. necessary to bind the materials together. Ultrasonic welding is used in many different industries such as medical, packaging, automotive, aerospace, electronics etc.
How does ultrasonic welding work?
Ultrasonic welding works by high-frequency ultrasonic acoustic vibrations. The piezoelectric effect allows the conversion of high-frequency electrical energy to high-frequency mechanical energy. The vibrations are applied to the materials being welded by a vibrating tool. The actual welding is a result of the frictional heat and agitation generated where the two materials meet, leading to a local softening or melting. This, together with the mechanical agitation, leads to a strong weld.
High quality bulk components
An ultrasonic welding device is typically fitted with one or more piezo bulk components. A typical design for the bulk component uses a ring of a hard doped piezoceramic material. We provide high quality bulk components that can be custom designed on a range of parameters: Piezoceramic material, electrode pattern and material, dimensions and frequency tolerances etc. Materials with low losses at high electrical field allow the generation of high mechanical power without excessive self-heating.
Custom designed transducer matching specific requirements
The transducer in the ultrasonic welding device is driven at high electrical field to provide the highest mechanical power. The movement of the piezo element is amplified using a sonotrode or “horn”, the whole assembly being preloaded to cope with the high dynamic forces. We offer to custom design the transducer for ultrasonic welders to match your specific requirements.
