Supporting the Health of Our Communities and Environments
REACH stands for “Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals” and RoHS stands for “Restriction of Hazardous Substances.” Both regulations are established to ensure the safe manufacturing, use, recycling, and disposal of goods.
REACH is a regulation that restricts the use of a wide range of chemical substances in all manufactured products that are created, sold, and imported into the EU (European Union). This includes everything from home products to manufactured goods for machinery or industrial work. All manufacturers within the Union are required to adhere to REACH regulations. However, companies established outside the EU are not bound by REACH obligations. Instead, the responsibility of ensuring REACH compliance falls on the company importing goods into the EU. The regulation is managed by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA), and companies must follow REACH procedures for collecting and assessing material properties. Documentation requires a written disclosure of all SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern). As of June 2024, there are 241 chemicals in this category.
RoHS is a regulation covering Electronics and Electrical Equipment (EEE). Products that fall under EEE include industrial equipment, medical devices, automotive electronics, consumer electronics, and more. This regulation restricts 10 specific substances manufactured, distributed, and imported within a country.
The restricted substances are:
• Lead (Pb)
• Mercury (Hg)
• Cadmium (Cd)
• Hexavalent Chromium (Cr6+)
• Polybrominated Biphenyls (PBBs)
• Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers (PBDEs)
• Bis(2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate (DEHP)
• Benzyl Butyl Phthalate (BBP)
• Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP)
• Diisobutyl Phthalate (DIBP)
RoHS is a self-declaration directive, meaning companies actively work to get their products RoHS compliant. Companies go through an audit and review process. Once the review is completed and the product and manufacturing pass all requirements, a company is presented with a certification of successful audit. RoHS restrictions are important not only for the EU but also for other countries that have adopted these regulations as a standard.
Today, as manufacturers, we have an obligation to help protect the communities and environments we live and work in. REACH and RoHS are important regulations that help keep manufacturers responsible for how they process materials. At CTS, we take these regulations incredibly seriously and provide our documentation and material properties to ensure we are doing our part in supporting a healthier world. We provide REACH, RoHS, and ISO Certificates. You can find these documents on our product pages or on our resource page filtered by “Compliance and Quality”.
